These steps detail how individuals with a CUNE issued device will upgrade their Operating System from Windows 10 to Windows 11. These instructions will not apply to personal computers.
Prepare to Upgrade
Most people should enjoy a seamless experience. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- This process will maintain all files backed up to OneDrive and Edge profile favorites.
- Currently installed applications and features should carry over, assuming they are compatible with Windows 11. Please have a copy of any necessary license keys should there be an issue with compatibility.
- Synced Channel folders from Teams should carry over, though we recommend making a note or screenshot of these folders to be sure.
- Printers and wireless networks will also transfer over to the new operating system.
- It is recommended that you export your Bookmarks from other browsers into a OneDrive folder.
- Backup any important files not in OneDrive, such as your Downloads folder, to an external drive or copy them into OneDrive.
- Check the status of your OneDrive application to ensure that is connected and files have synced.
- Make sure you have 1Password available on a second device, as this application won't trust the new operating system. It will need to send a code to that second device.
- Your lock screen and desktop background will be reset to the default. If these pictures are special to you, please make sure there is a copy saved in OneDrive.
Set up your system
Here are the requirements for completing this upgrade
- This must be done on-campus using a CUNE network
- The upgrade requires having at least 30GB of free storage available. If not, the upgrade will fail
- For fully remote staff: VPN should be connected to begin the upgrade; the download will be slow
- The computer must be connected to power for the duration of the process
- Ensure that all necessary files have synced to OneDrive
- A majority of this upgrade is automated and can be done without your interaction
- Plan to be without the system for about two hours during the upgrade and subsequent reboots
- Plan to devote at least 30 minutes customization after the automated process completes
Begin the Upgrade
- Make sure you are connected to a CUNE wired or wireless network
- Open OneDrive by clicking the cloud icon in the lower right corner
-
Make sure it states Your files are synced
Note: If this anything else appears, please address the issue or contact the Helpdesk before proceeding -
Search for or navigate to the Software Center application in the Start menu
- Navigate to Operating Systems on the left side
-
Click on Windows 11 23H2 IPU
-
Click the Install button
-
Confirm the installation by clicking Install again
- A series of windows will pop-up which do not require interaction
- From here, the upgrade is hands-off until the lock screen or logon screen stays in place
- The images below will appear, if you wish to follow along
-
At this point, you can walk away as the process completes and skip to step 14
-
The computer restarts at this point (Apologies on the quality of these images, as they're impossible to get without an external camera)
- At the end of the upgrade, a lovely picture will appear on the screen (this picture changes regularly, so it didn't make sense to include it)
- Wake up the computer as you normally do by wiggling the mouse or tapping the keyboard
- You are presented with a login page where you enter your username (typically first.last) and your normal password
-
It will take several minutes to log in and you'll see some conscientious messages
- After the initial login, you will be prompted almost immediately to reboot
-
Click Restart
- Login again
- After a few moments, you will be prompted again to restart
-
Click Restart
-
This second reboot may take a few extra minutes while displaying messages like these
- When this is complete, login again
- Some reported a third prompt to reboot, so prepare for that
- Once this is complete, log in
- Proceed to customize your profile and begin using the system
Suggested Profile Customizations
- Taskbar settings

- Set your default browser to your favorite
- Log into your browser(s) profile(s) or import bookmarks from your backup
